On Saturday, January 24, get ready to turn it up to 11! Join us at the Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco) with your biggest hair and acid-washed jeans. From 7pm to 2am, get rowdy while honoring and remembering those impacted by breast cancer. This rockumentary-inspired fundraiser will feature riotous DJs, live performance art, tasty nibbles, an air guitar contest, and of course, a Spinal-Tap inspired fashion show featuring by yours truly: Dark Garden Unique Corsetry, amongst others. Will there be leather? Yes. Animal print? Hell yes.

Dark Garden proprietress Autumn Adamme.
Beats for Boobs is a project of the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund, granting financial support to local breast cancer organizations that offer direct services to survivors, those currently battling breast cancer, and organizations that promote prevention. Proceeds will be granted to their four Bay Area based beneficiaries. Beats for Boobs unites the community with a unique event featuring art, fashion, food, music, and education. Tickets start at $43.

Last Call for the Edwardian Ball!

Did your true love completely fail to deliver on the ladies dancing and lords a-leaping for Christmas? Don't worry, the Edwardian Ball has you covered! This annual event is inspired by the whimsically macabre works of Edward Gorey and showcases a broad array of entertainments, vendors, and costumed attendees.

The 15th Annual Edwardian Ball: Edward Gorey's "The Beastly Baby"
Yes, the Edwardian Ball is nearly upon us: Next Friday and Saturday, January 16th & 17th, prepare for a marvelous and oh-so-stylish spectacle at the Regency Ballroom. Thank you to all who turned out for our What to Wear to the Edwardian Ball styling party. If you're still on the fence about whether to go to the ball, which night to attend, or whether to spring for VIP tickets, we've got those answers right here for you.

Style inspiration: model Nicole Simone in carnival-inspired finery. Photo © Aaron Fagerstrom
Friday at the Edwardian Ball is the "World's Faire" and is hosted by MC Kingfish of Hubba Hubba Revue fame. This first night of the ball has a slightly more casual vibe - as much as any ball could ever be considered "casual," that is! Daywear-inspired styling is more acceptable for Friday night... perhaps a fun circus outfit will get you in the mood for a pedal-powered carousel by Cyclecide and carnival games from The Barbary Coast Midway! Prepare to dance to DJs Shakti Bliss and Fact.50 as well as musical performances by Diego's Umbrella, The Speakeasy Syndicate and Eric McFadden.

Dark Garden fashion show at the Edwardian Ball, featuring two Dollymop corsets and a bespoke Aziza.
Saturday is the Edwardian Ball proper, in all its Edward Gorey glory! Dress to the nines for an evening of ballroom dance and performances. With MC Armitage Shanks, the main stage will brim with entertainments all night long. Rosin Coven, the world's premier pagan lounge ensemble, are both the hosts of the ball and the house band. As ever, we will debut a stunning new collection of corseted ensembles during our fashion show spectacular, this year in collaboration with Edwardian Ball headliners, the Vau de Vire Society. At the end of the night, the Vau de Vire Society will also stage a second show: a production of Edward Gorey's "The Beastly Baby." These circus virtuosos are not to be missed, and we could not be more thrilled to partner with them for our Saturday fashion show!

The Vau de Vire Society at the Edwardian Ball, headlining Saturday night's entertainments.
On both nights, you can look forward to spectacular life size Edward Gorey cutouts, the antics of Fou Fou Ha!, and the swirling skirts of Le Cancan Bijou. Upstairs in the opulent red Lodge, we'll be displaying more fashionable Dark Garden delights on living statues and sensual shadow screens. There's a full bar and a hot food menu, and even an Absinthe Bar featuring Treasure Island's Raff Distillerie (who also just so happens to make my favorite gin). That's just a sampling of course... the amusements are nearly too numerous to list (but are, in fact, listed on the Edwardian Ball website.)

Le Cancan Bijou at the Edwardian Ball
The Edwardian Ball will also be coming to Los Angeles on Saturday, February 14. How's that for a very memorable Valentine's Day or a fabulous night of solo fun with friends (or your personal harem)!

VIP lounge at the Edwardian Ball
Dark Garden still has available tickets for the San Francisco Edwardian Ball and World's Faire. Ticket sales are cash only in our boutique at 321 Linden St., San Francisco. General Admission tickets are $50 (Friday) or $57 (Saturday), covering an evening of dancing and entertainments as well as a beautifully eclectic vendor's bazaar. VIP tickets are $97-$102 and also include access to an exclusive VIP lounge with plenty of seating with a spectacular view of the main stage. All prices include a small handling fee.

Fabric Specials for Valentine's Day!

$

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we have some red-hot fabric specials for you! These fabrics are available on any made-to-order corset for a limited time only. We are waiving the custom fabric fee (a $200 savings) on the following sultry styles through the end of February.

Dark Garden's fabric specials for Valentine's Day:
Black filigree brocade, red patent leather, and red poplin.
Red Poplin: Available in either basic or Signature construction, our poplin is a wonderfully hard-wearing fabric. Signature Collection corsets come complete with loops for detachable garters (garters sold separately) and a back panel to sit behind your back lacing. This brilliant scarlet hue is usually only available behind our sumptuous lace overlay, but for the next month you can have it as a sturdy (and economical) alternative to our luscious, luminous Signature red silk-satin.

Black filigree brocade in a finely woven silk/rayon blend.
Black Filigree Brocade: Make no mistake, a Dark Garden brocade is not like the loosely-woven polyester fabrics you'll find at your local fabric store. This gorgeous and subtle brocade features a tightly-woven black-on-black filigree motif. This silk/rayon blend is suitable for either an occasional night out or consistent wear for waist training. Did you know that all Dark Garden brocades are carefully matched at the center front and center back to create an uninterrupted repeating pattern?

Dark Garden "Sweetheart" corset in red poplin.
Red Patent Leather: For the ultimate, super-shiny, luxe experience, you just can't top a patent leather corset! We go to great lengths to source leather with the right qualities for corsetry. Our patent leather molds around the body but doesn't crack like vinyl. This means your corset will have a longer life, lasting years with proper care. The red patent leather is not just a standalone statement piece: it makes a stunningly versatile foundation for cosplay and is a guaranteed head-turner at the Folsom St. Fair.

These fabrics are available only in-store or over the phone - pop into 321 Linden St., San Francisco for an expert fitting and handle these limited edition options for yourself, or call us at 415-431-7684. This is the perfect time to place an order for Valentine's Day in these special fabrics or our classic Signature Collection, such as the Risqué Collection: a perennial favorite for boudoir or foundation wear.

Dark Garden is so excited to return to the Los Angeles Vintage Fashion Expo on February 7th & 8th, where we will once again share a booth with ReVamp. You can see us there and get professionally fitted for a ready-to-wear or bespoke corset at The Reef, 1933 Broadway St., Los Angeles. Tickets are $12-$30, or only $5 with a valid student ID on Sunday. The Vintage Fashion Expo hosts an array of vendors with gorgeous original vintage clothing and accessories, but, in the words of Christian Dior:
"Without proper foundations, there can be no fashion."
What foundations? Foundation garments - corsets, of course! Most vintage pieces were cut to be worn with at least a girdle or merry widow, so their waists tend to be too small with a different hang and posture if worn without shapewear. A Dark Garden corset makes a wonderful foundation for vintage dresses and gowns, yet is cut to suit modern bodies with unparalleled all-day support and comfort. Our standard fit line is based on an average of thousands of our handmade bespoke corsets, and doesn't pinch or roll like stretch shapewear.

We'll be bringing a selection of our Basics in simple and sturdy black poplin as well as our Risqué line. The Risqué's single-layer mesh construction with luscious silk-satin accents makes it a lightweight, comfortable, and oh-so-sexy base for any ensemble, and comes standard with detachable garters... perfect for snag-free support of your vintage nylon stockings!

Our partner ReVamp specializes in exacting period reproductions from 1910-1957 with all the vintage style and none of the vintage DNA. ReVamp was originally founded as the brainchild of current owner Annamarie von Firley and Dark Garden proprietress Autumn Adamme. Though our two companies are now separate entities we have always maintained a close relationship with Annamarie von Firley. Indeed, Autumn is often seen working at Dark Garden in her ReVamp "Maisie" sailor slacks.

The Vintage Fashion Expo is the first of many events in Los Angeles we are doing next month. We'll also be doing a trunk show at Jenette Bras on February 8th, another trunk show hosted by ReVamp on February 13th, and of course, the Edwardian Ball on February 14th!

Waist training has been quickly gaining momentum since last year. If you're in LA you may have been eyeing some of its celebrity proponents firsthand but still have a lot of questions. Autumn and I are both happy to talk you through waist training with an authentic and shapely steel-boned corset. We'll answer your questions like, "What style do I start with?" and "Is it safe?" (It totally is, at least when you use a high-quality and properly fitted corset.)

A Dark Garden corset is the perfect complement to formal and vintage dresses, creating a natural-looking hourglass figure, instantly improving your posture, and refining the line and hang of any garment its worn beneath. Of course, our creations are so beautifully crafted and designed that they are often styled as the centerpiece to an ensemble!

Kalico Delafay's true specialty lies in her gorgeous sculpted felt millinery. Each of Kalico's hats is a unique design, never to be created again. (I myself am the proud owner of four of her blocked hats as well as several fascinators.) Part of the unique nature of a Kalico Delafay creation comes from her materials choices: Kalico repurposes and upcycles vintage fur-felt, veiling, and buttons, mixing them with gorgeous textural plumage.

Fascinators, lace crowns, and blocked hats by Kalico Delafay Millinery.
You can RSVP to the event on Facebook. Of course, if you're not going to be in LA, we'll be fitting fine corsets at 321 Linden St., San Francisco, 6 days a week. We also have a selection of millinery and accessories from Kalico and other independent designers on display in the boutique.

Brides unite! Come join Dark Garden in San Francisco for a lovely afternoon trunk show and bridal mixer with Kalico Delafay and Pop Antique on Sunday, March 15th. Our boutique is nestled in lovely Hayes Valley; why not make a day of it? Bring your mom, Maid of Honor, or Best Person. First, grab brunch at one of our favorite neighborhood spots, like Absinthe or Chez Maman. Then swing by our boutique at 321 Linden St. for a top-up on bubbly punch and some mingling with other brides. (Nobody likes talking about weddings as much as another bride!) Browse a curated selection of gorgeous handmade headpieces and talk to the designers about having a piece custom-made. On your way out, have a taste of Smitten's fresh-made ice cream, scope out the vintage dresses at Ver Unica, and perch in Patricia's Green with your notebook as you continue your wedding planning.

Kalico Delafay is our in-house associate designer of the Dollymop corset line, and she's designed several exquisite bridal ensembles for us over the year. However, her true passion lies in millinery. All of her creations are one-of-a-kind. Kalico's sculpted felt creations utilize exquisitely upcycled vintage felt, veiling, and buttons, and she also does stunning lace and horsehair fascinators, straw boaters, and gloriously regal crowns made of stiffened lace and glimmering Swarovski crystals. Personally, of the several Kalico Delafay hats I own, my favorite is the one she custom-made just for me. I highly encourage you to commission a bespoke piece from Kalico - you will be absolutely thrilled with the result.

My line, Pop Antique, has a more minimalist approach. My "future vintage" style nods to the classic mid-century aesthetic without replicating it. I love simple, classic shapes, executed with great attention to proportion and finishing details. I never use glue to assemble my horsehair fascinators and all my buckram and sinamay pieces are individually hand-blocked. I especially love to make things my clients can envision fitting in their life for more than just a special occasion - a gorgeous hat collection deserves to see the world, not just sit in a stunning vintage hat box! My wedding is also coming up this October so I'd love to hear all the foibles and triumphs from your own wedding planning.

Of course, if what you're after is a traditional veil, Dark Garden's in-house bridal atelier can make veils of any length, trimmed in simple satin ribbon or luxurious lace. While you're with us, you can get fitted in one of our fabulous ready-to-wear corsets and book an appointment to have a bespoke bridal ensemble designed just for you. Not sure you're ready to book a full appointment? Proprietress and lead designer Autumn Adamme will be available for on-the-fly mini consults, as, of course, will Kalico.

We can't wait to see you on Sunday, March 15 for our bridal mixer! If you've been struggling with your choice of veil or headwear, we're sure to have something special that will please you.

How to Break In a Dark Garden Corset

$

0
We often equate corset shopping to shoe shopping. Like shoes, if you only have one corset that you wear everyday, it will wear out more quickly. And like new shoes, your corset might need a little bit of time to break in and mold to your body. If you're wondering how long this process should take and how you should do it, this is the article for you! Much of this information is aimed at waist trainers, but even if you're just wearing your corset for a special occasion like a wedding you may have wondered about breaking in your new corset.

Proprietress Autumn Adamme

Our proprietress, Autumn Adamme, has been making corsets for over 25 years, and, having grown up in a historic costuming community, has been wearing them for over 30. You can see she has a lot of experience to draw on when designing the construction, fit, and wear of our handmade beauties!

Your new Dark Garden corset should fit you well from the get-go. Don't worry about "seasoning" your new corset, be it Ready-to-Wear, Personalized Made-to-Order, or Bespoke, to make it fit. Your new corset should lace to a gap of 2-3", with the ribs and hips just flush against the sides of your body, and a comfortable compression at the waist. If you are "seasoning" your corset with only the waist actually touching your body, you may as well just be wearing a belt! Part of the reason to train with a corset instead of a belt is that you support your guts while you make your waist more pliable.
If you train too far without this support for your belly, you will encourage that below the waist bulge that very few people like. Additionally, wearing your corsets with a too-wide gap strains the bones at the back of the corset and can cause them to twist in their channels or warp the fabric.

When you first pick up your new corset, wearing it at the standard 2" lacing gap might seem a bit too snug. Breaking in a corset, especially for first-time corset wearers, is also about training your body to understand the compression/redistribution and newly improved posture. With your body heat, the fibers of the fabric will over time relax and mold around your unique body shape and the corset itself becomes more pliable. The waist should stay fairly stable, because of the waist tape running the circumference of that area.

Here at Dark Garden, we do have an organic process of "breaking  in" our corsets. It is a much more relaxed process than the "seasoning" espoused by many. The nuance in vernacular seems defined by common use, different methods to achieve the same goal.

  • Simply lace your corset as tight as you find comfortable.
  • Leave it on as long as you can, going about the sorts of activities you expect to experience while wearing your corset in the long run.
  • Do this as often as is practical.
  • If you're waist training, this will seamlessly translate to wearing your corset at its designated 2" gap on a daily basis.
  • In other words, just wear your corset, but don't overlace.

A well-fitted corset should sit pretty flush against your ribs and hips immediately, as would be assessed by our trained fitters on any visitors to our San Francisco boutique. Our company policy is to only sell corsets that are a good fit in both size and shape: a corset that stands away from the ribs and hips to a noticeable extent can chafe and create pressure points instead of support. Unless you are actively losing weight, your brand new corset should fit well with a gap that is no more than 1" wider than the final lacing gap measurement. In most cases, this means that you will have a 3" gap for first wear, and eventually settle to the standard 2". If the corset and your body are in perfect harmony, feel free to wear your corset perfectly laced to its 2" gap immediately, for as long as you like.

Breaking in a corset should not be the mechanism that makes it fit. Breaking in a corset makes it more comfortable to wear, especially for longer periods of time.

After careful development, we are thrilled to herald the arrival of our newest underbust corset style: the Cupid. The Cupid is the underbust version of our best-selling Valentine corset. If your hourglass is more than half-full, then the Cupid is for you.

The Cupid features ten shapely panels with double boning on each seam, for a total of 22 spring steel bones plus a sturdy German busk. Most of our ready-to-wear styles are eight panel construction; the extra panels of the Cupid and Valentine allow for smoother and more dramatic curves. In sizes 28 and up, the Cupid has an even more pronounced hip spring that accommodates the extra compression that is possible in those sizes. As compared to the Cincher, you will find the Cupid to be even more supportive, having a bust-framing point at the center front and a slight high back to encourage smooth lines.

We currently have the Cupid available in sizes 24" through 34", as measured at the waist. We will soon be offering it in our complete 18" to 38" size run, in store and online. Visit our 321 Linden St. boutique, where our staff will help fit you in a corset of the correct size and even measure you for any fit personalizations you may need. The Cupid starts at $335 in basic black poplin - an excellent choice for beginning waist training. Come try on the Cupid and get struck by love's arrow!

A Queer-Owned Business
Dark Garden is not only a woman-owned, queer-friendly business, we are queer-owned! Our atmosphere of acceptance has attracted not only San Francisco's legendary gay community as clientele, but also as our employees. The overwhelming majority of our staff identify along the LGBTQ spectrum, though of course our self-identified straight employees are equally welcomed. Our team is a very close-knit group, fostering a playful atmosphere in the workroom where we create our corsets, each one individually made to order.

Our History
"Is this a new shop?" is a question we probably get at least once a week. Tucked away at 321 Linden St, a small side street in Hayes Valley, our boutique and atelier is nestled cozily next to Blue Bottle Coffee. Despite our bright purple exterior, many people don't even realize we're here. But not only have we been in Hayes Valley for over 15 years, we've been in business in San Francisco since 1989, and it's been our pleasure to serve the gay and fetish communities since our inception. As you can imagine, the cultural landscape of San Francisco has changed a lot in the intervening 26 years. In that time, we have made corsets for hundreds of queer, trans, and cross-dressing clients.

Celebrate Pride with Us
Our doors are open six days a week. We invite you to stop by for a consultation at the 321 Linden St. boutique during business hours and be dazzled by the array of corsetry options. Not only has it been our joy to serve our local queer community but we are so grateful for the support we have received from that community through the years. We would not be the business we are today without that support and collaboration!

We will be tea modeling our couture fashions at the Gay Pride VIP party on June 28 from 2-5pm. See you there!

On Waist Training with Dark Garden Corsets

This post was originally written on MissDarkGarden.Tumblr.com, as part of Autumn's Daily Corset Posts series.

I was recently asked to provide some bite-sized information on waist training, including what type of garment is best suited. What follows is more than a bite or two, but easily digestible at one sitting.

Many things can be used to train the waist, but none is better than a shapely corset. Corsets reduce the waist by compressing the waistline, but also comfortably supporting the ribs and hips. Some “waist trainers” being sold simply compress the whole mid-section, a far less comfortable approach, as this squeezes the ribs, resulting in the notorious inability to breathe. In addition, many waist trainers are stretchy and have no boning, which means they have the potential to roll up into a small band: uncomfortable, and liable to create unsightly bulges above and below the waistline. Well-made corsets are supported with steel boning, which keeps the length of the corset consistent, no matter how snugly the corset is pulled.

Waist training works by gradually reducing the areas of the body that are being compressed. This is another reason why it’s important to have a garment that is shapely and fits you well. Some people believe you can “season” a corset into fitting by starting out with something that is large for the ribs and hips, but only snug at the waist. This has the potential of not only intestinal discomfort, but training the organs down into the lower abdominal region, since in that situation there would be no support. A corset that is comfortably snug over the hips and tummy can actually create a flatter stomach than the wearer starts out with.

To make progress, frequent, comfortably snug wear is more superior to infrequent, very tight lacing. It’s very much like results from exercise and diet - the better your habits are, the more progress you make. Likewise, as soon as you go off your program, your results begin to diminish. There is not a hard or fast rule about how much you have to wear a corset to make progress, but again, like exercise, if you do it once a week, your progress will be less than if you wear it moderately for a little while every day, or even every other day. That said, even once a week will get you more progress than never starting!

Most people are able to begin with a standard-sized corset before eventually graduating to wanting a custom or bespoke corset. The majority of waist trainers use an underbust corset on a daily basis, but some women with fuller bustlines are very happy to have the bust support of well-made overbust corsets as well.

At Dark Garden, we developed our unique ready-to-wear corset patterns after years of making exclusively custom sized corsets, and put the information we gathered there into creating some of the shapeliest, most comfortable corsets available anywhere. We continue to refine our patterns, and add styles as needed. With us, most waist trainers begin with our Cincher or our Cupid, a more shapely underbust corset. Those that are shorter waisted or just want a nip at the waist enjoy wearing the Corselette or Waspie. Many eventually go on to have a bespoke Underbust Victorian or Underbust Edwardian custom fit to their body via exhaustive measurements and multiple mock-up fittings.

As someone who has worn corsets both lightly laced and very tightly laced for more than 20 years, I firmly believe that good corsets can feel absolutely wonderful - comfortable and supportive - but there are plenty of poorly made and uncomfortable corsets on the market, especially these days. I recommend looking for a corset that creates more of this } { shape (an hourglass with a defined waist), than this ) ( shape (a shallowly flared tube).

Quality materials and boning are more important than one might expect. You don’t want cheap steel, because it can break, causing damage to the corset and wearer. It needs to be made well, because a poorly constructed corset will twist around the body, which can cause back problems - just like wearing a back brace that forces your body into a poor posture and holds it there.

Lastly, make sure you’re putting your corset on properly, as this can make or break your corset wearing experience - if the corset is too high on the body, or tilted forward, it will put pressure on the ribs, making breathing difficult. The waistline should be parallel to the floor. Here’s a lacing video we made, all about lacing someone else into a corset - no bedposts or knees required! If you think you can’t put a corset on yourself - here you go!

Here at Dark Garden, we've had the pleasure of working with many, many queer couples to create ensembles for their weddings. After the back-and-forth battleground that California was, we are so very thrilled that gay marriage is now a right across all 50 states. It's been a joy for all of us to watch the news and see couples across the entire country have the opportunity to (legally) express their devotion and commitment, and have access to all the vital partnership opportunities that affords.

Rummage Sale Update: Dollymop Sample Sale!

The consignment corsets are coming in for our Annual Rummage Sale, but did you know that we also sell archive and fashion show corsets at this yearly event? This year, associate designer Kalico Delafay will be selling some amazing ensembles from her fashion show collections and personal wardrobe.

Most of Kalico's ensembles are based on 22" corsets, one of our most popular sizes. Her body-conscious designs are often cut to a slightly more dramatic hourglass than her ready-to-wear Dollymop line. Though the full list of outfits has yet to be finalized, she's given me a preview of what she plans to sell, and there are some stellar looks in there! If you see something you like and it's not in your size, don't forget you can make an appointment with Kalico to have her design a head-to-toe look just for you!

This grey "wool cupcake" ensemble dates from the launch of the Dollymop collection. Covered in wool petals and vintage buttons, the skirt is elaborately ruched, showcasing Kalico's eye for asymmetric draping and one-of-a-kind pieces.

From Kalico's personal collection comes this effortlessly graceful black jersey Dollymop column ensemble. If you've ever wanted to look like a Hollywood starlet but feel like you're wearing pajamas... this is the gown for you!

Two classic looks from the 2014 collection will be available: complementary teal columns made of a Dollymop overbust corset and matching fishtail "butt skirt" that perfectly contours and subtly lifts any derriere.

Someone's sure to go wild for this leopard print high-back Dollymop outfit. There's even a matching hat! The midi-length fishtail skirt is cocktail-hour ready, but I could also see the corset alone perfectly paired with black capri pants for an awesome retro look.

The last of the black columns from our 2012 Edwardian collection will also be for sale. These statuesque looks are utterly timeless. Note the gorgeous pleated texture on the standard fit 20" Dollymop corset, the smallest of the samples listed here.

If you loved this year's collection of shimmery and sheer looks, it's highly probable that Kalico will be letting go of at least one - and possibly all - of these gorgeous ensembles. Though Kalico's inspiration was slinky screen sirens, the glimmering nude looks are absolutely on point for the current "naked dress" trend.

It's truly an amazing collection of couture looks that we'll be selling at our Annual Rummage Sale. This is a sample sale not to be missed, and the final list of looks (and prices) won't be revealed until the event. Be sure to visit us at 321 Linden St., San Francisco, on July 19th for the Annual Rummage Sale!
